professional expectation gaps

I’ve spent 7 years being an architectural student in two countries, experiencing a significant contrast in construction methodologies, technologies, and building science. Yet both countries are similar in an important aspect, the gap between academics and professional practice.

The professional expectations from a fresh graduate seemed to be prioritized on software knowledge and real-world experience over academic design excellence. That’s fair, I have to learn before I dictate any aspect of a project I undertake or participate in. Liabilities can lead to lawsuits, a crumbling reputation, and a failing practice.

There are aspects like contracts, code, regulations, and industry-standard software that could be prioritized over vague academic design exercises. Moreover, the cost of education is no discount.

In my opinion, irrespective of the country or the industry, teaching needs to align better with the expectations of respective professional practices.
